Move Over Oak, New Pokémon Anime Kanto Professor Introduced Alongside Daughter

New Pokémon Anime characters

After being in one place for an entire generation, Ash and his new friend Go will be travelling to all the Pokémon regions in the new Pokémon anime series, and to do so, they need a base of operations. On October 11, the official Pokémon anime Twitter account announced where that base will be, and the new characters who come along with it.

The base will be a new Pokémon lab in the port town of Vermillion City in the Kanto region. Seasoned Pokémon fans would remember that there was a plot of land with a hegde out front being built in the Kanto region games, Twitter user KINAM0CHI pointed out that this might be where the new lab is. In the games, Vermillion City was used as a docking location for the S.S. Aqua, used by the player to travel between Kanto and Johto in generations 2 and 4, and as the docking location for the Seagallop in generation 3 to travel to the Sevii Islands.

With a new Pokémon lab comes a new Pokémon Professor. Introduced in the tweet above is Professor Sakuragi, whose English name is unknown at this time. Professor Sakuragi will be supporting Ash and Go on their travels around the Pokémon regions. Voicing Sakuragi is vetern to the franchise, Yuichi Nakamura, who voiced N in the Pokémon Best Wishes saga of the series. Nakamura said that he and everyone can make “this series fun and exciting.”

Sakuragi’s daughter, Koharu – whose English name is also unknown at this stage – was also introduced. Koharu is a childhood friend to Go and is also 10 years old. Her partner Pokémon is Yamper, an electric type Pokémon based off a corgi from the Galar region. Voicing Koharu is Kana Hanazawa (Kuroneko in Oreimo, Mayuri Shiina in STEINS;GATEIchika Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets), who also voiced May in the Japanese Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Animated Trailer.

Excited for the role, Hanazawa commented that she “was the same age as Satoshi (Ash’s Japanese name) when the anime started broadcasting and was able to experience the excitement through him. I will do my best to make sure you like this series!”
